On July 9, the 17th Marcel Grossmann Award was awarded by the center to Li Di, chief scientist of the "China Sky Eye" and researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in recognition of his pioneering contribution to the most sensitive radio telescope project. Li Di is the first scientist to win the award for his academic achievements in China.
The 500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), known as the "China Sky Eye", is located in Pingtang County, Guizhou Province, and is the worlds largest single-aperture radio telescope. Li Di has been a scientist on the FAST project since 2008 and has been the chief scientist of FAST since 2018. His award-winning achievements this time include "precisely measuring interstellar magnetic fields and promoting the field of fast radio bursts into the era of large-sample statistical research."
Regarding this award, Li Qi said: "I am very fortunate to have a mentor and pioneer like Mr. Nan Rendong, to have the FAST engineering team fighting side by side, and to have many colleagues achieve mutual success. I believe this is just a small wave at the beginning of the Chinese astronomy wave."
The Marcel Grossmann Award is regarded as one of the most important awards in the international physics community. The award is named after the Swiss mathematician Marcel Grossmann. It was established in 1985 and is awarded during the Marcel Grossmann Conference held every three years. The award has individual awards and institutional awards. Chinese scientists who have previously won individual awards include Chen Ning Yang, Tsung-Dao Lee and Shing-Tung Yau
